What's New?

This edition of BeyondTraceability Talks shows how East African businesses can turn traceability into a driver of competitiveness, inclusion, and resilience, not just compliance.

With 90% of coffee produced by smallholders in fragmented supply chains, traceability unlocks market trust and protects livelihoods. Featuring experts from Diageo, UCDA, KOLTIVA and AFO, the session offers practical steps, real examples, and collaboration models to keep smallholders included.

Only 15% Informed, 85% at Risk:
How The Compliance Awareness Threatening East Africa’s €2.75 Billion EU Market ?

Programme Overview

A seismic shift is underway in global trade. With €2.75 billion in EU imports from Eastern Africa hanging in the balance, the lifeblood of millions of coffee, cocoa, and palm oil is under threat. New EU regulations now demand proof of responsible sourcing and deforestation-free production. Yet, alarmingly, only 15% of Eastern African companies are well-informed about these fast-evolving rules (Danish Industry Report, 2025). As compliance becomes non-negotiable, this awareness gap could determine who thrives, and who’s shut out of the European market.

The European Green Deal is reshaping the landscape with overlapping mandates: the CSRD requires full ESG impact disclosures and double materiality assessments; the CSDDD enforces human rights and environmental due diligence; and the EUDR demands traceable, deforestation-free sourcing. For exporters, navigating this regulatory maze is no longer optional—it’s existential.

The reality on the ground is stark. In East Africa, forest-risk commodities like coffee are overwhelmingly produced by smallholders, around 90% of farms span just 1–10 hectares (Partnership for Forest, 2024). Most lack GPS devices, smartphones, or reliable internet access, making digital traceability nearly impossible. Add to this the complexity of fragmented supply chains, where businesses source from multiple smallholders through layers of intermediaries, and the challenge intensifies. Verifying commodity origin, collecting high-quality farm data, confirming legal land use, and ensuring truly “deforestation-free” production becomes an uphill battle.

This moment presents a dual-edged sword: a challenge for those unprepared, and a golden opportunity for those who act. Producers, cooperatives, and exporters that embrace inclusive, tech-enabled traceability can safeguard market access, strengthen buyer trust, and unlock premium pricing. But without urgent, scalable traceability solutions, smallholders risk exclusion, losing not just income, but their place in global trade.
