Global cocoa is entering a defining decade. The latest cocoa processing data underscores a significant shift in the industry's center of gravity. The Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA) reported Asian cocoa grindings reaching 223,503 metric tonnes in Q1 2026, representing a 5.2% increase year-on-year and a 13.4% rise compared to the previous quarter (Cocoaintel, 2026). The figures signal a broader structural realignment in global cocoa processing, with Asia increasingly emerging as a critical hub for cocoa demand, processing capacity, and sustainability innovation. As investment, consumption, and value-added activities continue to expand across the region, Asia-Pacific is becoming not only an important growth market for cocoa, but also a key testing ground for the future of sustainable cocoa supply chains

 

Indonesia's cocoa journey illustrates both the challenge and the opportunity. Once the world's third-largest cocoa producer, the country has experienced a significant decline in production over the past two decades (The Business Times SG, 2025). Aging cocoa trees, declining soil fertility, pest and disease pressure, and increasingly unpredictable weather have reduced productivity across many farming communities.


The future of cocoa growth in the region cannot depend on agricultural expansion alone. Instead, it must come from improving productivity on existing farms while protecting forests, restoring ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience, and creating economic opportunities for farming communities.

The concept of "green cocoa" is often associated with compliance initiatives such as deforestation-free sourcing, due diligence requirements, carbon reporting, or sustainability certifications. These activities remain important, but they represent only part of the sustainability journey.

The companies that will lead the next generation of sustainable cocoa will be those that connect these different capabilities into one integrated ecosystem, where data supports better decisions, sustainability creates business value, and farmers remain at the center of every initiative.
