As one of the few tech companies present, Koltiva shared real-world experience empowering smallholder producers and governments to protect authenticity, enforce international GI rights, and build transparent supply chains through cutting-edge data systems.
As GIs become critical tools for rural development and cultural preservation, Koltiva is bridging the gap for emerging economies facing systemic challenges—like fragmented value chains and counterfeit threats. Through integrated mobile and QR code tech, Koltiva enables producers in over 50 countries to meet international standards, access new markets, and prove origin with trust and transparency.
The oriGIn 2025 meeting reaffirmed one urgent truth: sustainability and transparency are no longer optional in global trade. Koltiva’s tech-driven approach to GI traceability ensures compliance with ESG and regulatory standards while meeting growing consumer demands for product origin, impact, and ethical sourcing. The future of GIs depends on tech-powered collaboration—and Koltiva is leading the way.
Koltiva joined the global dialogue on protecting and promoting Geographical Indications (GIs) at the oriGIn 2025 Expert Meeting, held on 12–13 June at the organization's headquarters in Geneva. As one of the few technology-based traceability solution providers participating in the high-level meeting, we spotlight our experience working with smallholder producers, governments, and certification bodies to ensure that GI products are protected and digitally traceable from origin to consumer.
The Expert Meeting convened public and private stakeholders, international institutions, GI producers' groups, and legal experts from over 40 countries. They addressed some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the global GI landscape—from the enforcement of GI rights in foreign jurisdictions, to the role of digital technologies in sustainability, communication, and consumer trust.
The Rising Importance of Geographical Indications in Emerging Economies
Geographical Indications have become a strategic tool for rural development, empowering producers to differentiate their goods based on quality, origin, and traditional know-how. Particularly in emerging economies like Indonesia, GIs present enormous potential to uplift smallholder farmers, preserve cultural heritage, and tap into global markets demanding authenticity and transparency.
Yet, many of these countries face systemic barriers: fragmented supply chains, lack of digital infrastructure, limited knowledge of GI protection in international trade, and the growing threat of counterfeiting. In this context, the use oftraceability technology and data systems becomes vital.
Table of Index:
Transparent, Inclusive GI Supply Chains
Koltiva's participation at oriGIn 2025 underscores our commitment to building inclusive, tech-driven supply chains that enable GI producers—especially smallholders—to compete on a global stage. Through our integrated technology ecosystem, we support producer mapping, digital traceability, quality verification, and certification management for GI products.
Digital traceability QR Code labeling and mobile applications developed by Koltiva provide farmers and cooperatives with the tools to collect, verify, and share product data securely. This allows stakeholders across the value chain to verifyorigin, prevent fraud, and meet compliance requirements from regulators and trade partners.
Strengthening International GI Protection with Technology
One of the key topics discussed at the oriGIn meeting was the implementation of bilateral and multilateral GI agreements, and how producers can enforce GI rights across borders. Koltiva highlighted how our traceability platform bridges regulatory gaps and serves as a trusted digital record to support international claims of origin and quality.
In many emerging markets, GI producers are challenged by linguistic, legal, and logistical complexities when trying to protect their products abroad. Our traceability tools help close this gap, creating verifiable digital footprints that meet international due diligence standards—whether under the EU's GI protection framework or national registries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Sustainability and Consumer Trust in the Age of Transparency
Sustainability and transparency are no longer optional—they are expected. During the technology panel at the oriGIn meeting, Pamela Aquino, Customer Success Representative at KOLTIVA for Latin America emphasized discussions on how digital tools can ensure environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance in GI supply chains.
With climate change and market volatility impacting rural livelihoods, ensuring long-term sustainability of GI products is critical. Our traceability system enables real-time monitoring of farming practices, social risks, and environmental impact, which is essential not only for certification but also for continuous improvement and climate adaptation.
Consumers around the world are increasingly interested in the story behind their food—where it came from, who produced it, and under what conditions. Koltiva's digital solutions make this story visible and verifiable, building trust between producers and end-buyers.

Looking Ahead: Scaling GI Protection Through Collaboration
The 2025 oriGIn Expert Meeting reaffirmed the need for stronger collaboration between technology providers, public authorities, and GI stakeholders. Our experience on the ground in over 50 countries proves that inclusive technology can be a game-changer for the GI sector—when paired with capacity building, policy alignment, and market access strategies.
Koltiva remains committed to helping countries, cooperatives, and producers unlock the full potential of GIs—by safeguarding authenticity, ensuring sustainability, and building digital bridges between origin and market. The company will continue to collaborate with global partners to build stronger, tech-enabled GI systems that are future-proof, inclusive, and transparent.
In the face of global challenges such as climate change, market fragmentation, and increasing counterfeit risks, Geographical Indications represent more than a label—they are a promise. With the right tools, partnerships, and innovations, Koltiva believes this promise can be protected, scaled, and shared across the world.
