Executive Summary
A global meta-analysis of 3,075 comparisons found agroforestry systems deliver 23% higher biodiversity and ecosystem services than conventional agriculture, with the strongest gains in soil and regulating functions rather than raw yield (Mathieu et al., 2025).
The ecological gains aren't a tradeoff against income. Field studies report agroforestry-linked household income increases ranging from roughly 11.5% in Tanzania to 34% in Peru, driven by diversified production (Kassa, 2026).

The Challenge: The Next Frontier of Landscape Restoration
Across conservation-priority landscapes worldwide, the challenge is no longer simply protecting forests or restoring biodiversity. The real question is how to achieve conservation outcomes while ensuring agriculture remains economically viable for the communities who depend on it. This challenge is especially important in countries like Indonesia, where some of the world's most ecologically significant landscapes also support millions of smallholder producers.
Conservation and agricultural production are often presented as competing priorities. In reality, long-term landscape resilience depends on integrating both goals. Farmers need productive land and sustainable livelihoods. Ecosystems need healthy soils, biodiversity, and functioning ecological processes. Sustainable landscape management requires solutions that support both. This is why agroforestry is becoming increasingly important in landscape restoration efforts: it does not force conservation and agricultural production to compete as separate goals. Combining crops with trees and other vegetation changes how the farmland itself functions, supporting productivity while restoring some of the ecological functions that intensive agriculture tends to strip out.

Why Agroforestry Is Gaining Global Momentum
Agroforestry is not a new concept. However, growing research continues to reinforce its value as a practical pathway for sustainable agriculture and conservation. Unlike conventional agricultural systems that often simplify landscapes into single-crop production, agroforestry integrates crops, trees, and other vegetation within the same production area. The results is a more diverse and resilient farming system that can support ecological functions while maintaining production.
The strongest evidence comes from a 2025 meta-analysis that pooled 20 separate global meta-analyses into 3,075 direct comparisons between agroforestry and conventional agricultural systems. The result were compelling: agroforestry systems improved biodiversity and ecosystem service delivery by an average of 23% worldwide. However, the gains were not evenly distributed. Supporting and regulating servic such as soil formation, pest control, and water cycling, showed larger improvements than production-related services. Soil organic carbon stocks benefited most in drier conditions, and forage production followed a similar pattern, peaking under arid stress rather than in wetter climates Mathieu et al., 2025).
On income specifically, a 2026 review of 91 peer-reviewed agroforestry studies published between 2007 and 2026 found consistent income diversification effects for smallholder producers, with reported increases ranging from about 11.5% in Tanzania to 34% in Peru depending on the system and market context (Kassa, 2026). Separate research on climate-smart agroforestry has linked tree integration to measurable adaptation benefits too, including improved water retention, reduced erosion, and buffered microclimates during heat and drought stress (Abebaw et al., 2025).
Taken together, the research suggests agroforestry can improve the ecological condition of farmland without treating producers’ livelihoods as a secondary concern, which is exactly what makes it relevant in conservation-priority landscapes, where the goal isn't just to restore ecosystems but to give communities a real reason to maintain them.
Moving From Agroforestry Projects to Agroforestry Systems
The case for agroforestry is strong, but evidence alone does not guarantee success at the landscape level. The real challenge begins when that evidence has to be translated into practice across farms, communities, and supply chains.
The difficult part begins when the model leaves the research paper and enters the farm. Which plots should be prioritized? Which crops and tree species are appropriate? What does the soil actually need? How should aging or unproductive farms be rehabilitated? How do producers build the skills to manage a more complex production system? And, critically, how does a short-term intervention become a farming model that continues after a project ends?
Successful agroforestry services require decisions about species selection, soil suitability, farm rehabilitation, producer capacity building, and long-term management. They require an understanding of how ecological restoration and agricultural productivity can reinforce one another over time.
Without this foundation, agroforestry risks becoming a short-term intervention rather than a long-term landscape strategy.

From Evidence to Practice: A Partnership in Three Landscapes
One evidence-to-practice approach approach is currently being implemented across three conservation-priority landscapes in Indonesia.

KOLTIVA was selected for its agronomic and agroforestry expertise and supports Konservasi Indonesia's cocoa and coffee agroforestry work across three landscapes chosen for their ecological importance rather than ease of implementation: the Batang Toru Forest Ecosystem and Batang Angkola in North Sumatra, the Gedepahala Landscape in West Java, and the Crown Jewel of Papua in West Papua.

Farm & Plot Assessment
The work starts by assessing farming practices, plot conditions, soil health, crop diversity, and environmental risks on each site. That assessment identifies priority improvements and guides the targeted support each farm receives, rather than applying the same intervention across landscapes with very different starting conditions.
Agroforestry Demonstration Plots
The program establishes demonstration plots that showcase sustainable cocoa and coffee systems, balancing productivity, biodiversity, and conservation outcomes in a way farmers can see for themselves before adopting it on their own land.
Agroforestry Systems & Replanting
Where farms need rehabilitation, the program supports intercropping, replanting, and farm rehabilitation using improved cocoa and coffee clones alongside diverse tree species, strengthening both resilience and incomes. The improved genetics address yield and disease resistance directly; the tree diversity is what drives the regulating and supporting ecosystem services the meta-analysis associates with agroforestry, benefits that compound over several seasons rather than showing up in a single harvest.

Soil Health & Conservation Practices
Nature-based agroforestry practices run underneath the more visible interventions, improving soil quality, reducing erosion, and restoring ecosystem functions. This is the mechanism behind the soil organic carbon gains the research literature ties to agroforestry, particularly in drier zones. It's slow, unglamorous work, and it's also the difference between a farm that's still productive in fifteen years and one that isn't.
Capacity Building & Sustainable Roadmap
The program provides farmer training, learning materials, and a Training of Trainers structure, paired with a long-term roadmap linking conservation, livelihoods, and market access. The aim is a model that's self-sustaining once the active phase of the program ends, not one dependent on continued outside support.

The research question about agroforestry is largely answered. The operational question is whether a program is willing to do the parts that don't show results right away, plot-level assessment, soil work that takes years to pay off, and training infrastructure built to outlast the grant. Skip those, and agroforestry risks becoming another planting initiative that reads well in a report and struggles by year three.
