Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is an approach to sustainable and environmentally responsible farming methods to increase crop yields. GAP application is essential for every agriculture, including oil palm. Met Ardianto, a highly respected palm oil farmer and cooperative leader in Langkat, Sumatera Utara, who stands at the forefront of promoting sustainable practices. Fuelled by his unwavering determination, Ardianto passionately dedicates himself to educating fellow producers about the importance of obtaining certification for palm oil producers. At the same time, he succeeds to managed his land area of around 20 hectares with environmentally friendly farming methods for the resilience palm oil sector, the surrounding environment, and the next generation.
His concern for the environment and agricultural sustainability led Ardianto to adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on his plantation land. Aware of the importance of supporting sustainable agriculture, Ardianto realized that implementing GAP could help achieve this goal. Through the GAP capacity building and training programs he participated in, Ardianto became aware of the important role of GAP in increasing palm oil production and increasing the operational effectiveness of the plantation as a whole.
During the GAP training process, Ardianto gained extensive knowledge about sustainable agricultural practices, including agri inputs utilization and environmentally friendly waste management techniques. In addition, Ardianto also learned about efficient and targeted fertilizer management. With well-planned fertilizers, Ardianto can optimize the nutrients oil palm plants need, resulting in better plant growth and increased production.
"Adopting capacity-building initiatives and Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) training has proven instrumental in achieving improved palm oil yields and enhancing the overall effectiveness of our plantations. Equipping ourselves with the necessary knowledge and skills enhanced the efficiency of our fertilization management," said Ardianto.
Ardianto and 250 other farmers demonstrated remarkable determination as they came together for a proactive capacity-building program to attain Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. Their collective effort highlights their commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable practices in the palm oil industry.
Through training and capacity building, Ardianto and the smallholders are actively working towards their goal of obtaining RSPO certification, tangible proof of their dedication to fostering positive changes in the agricultural sector. Their proactive approach emphasizes the significance of responsible practices and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more sustainable future in palm oil farming. Together, they are laying the foundation for a greener and more eco-friendly agricultural landscape.
Beyond sustainability, RSPO brings more benefits for smallholders in rural areas. They see RSPO certification as an opportunity to access better prospects and gain consumer trust, ensuring a stable and fair market price for their palm oil produce. Embracing the principles of RSPO, Ardianto and the smallholders envision a future where responsible practices lead to economic growth and the preservation of the environment. For Ardianto, obtaining certification represents a tangible realization of the rewards of his steadfast adherence to #GoodAgriculturalPractices. It empowers him to produce exceptional palm oil while focusing on environmental sustainability. His dedication sets a shining example for others in the industry, fostering a more sustainable future for palm oil production.
"RSPO certification encourages us to adopt and implement sustainable agricultural practices. Premium prices for certified palm oil also help increase our earnings, while access to wider markets provides more stable market opportunities. This can enhance economic stability and support the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities," said Ardianto.
