Producers remain at the heart of Indonesia’s rural economy—and in Aceh Tenggara, their role is being reenergized through strategic collaboration. In a renewed push to elevate the local agricultural economy, the Regent of Aceh Tenggara, HM Salim Fakhry, SE, MM, welcomed a team from the Leuser Alas-Singkil River-basin (LASR) for a formal audience to strengthen economic opportunities for cocoa farmers in the region, known locally as Bumi Sepakat Segenep.

In a formal meeting held in Kutacane, Regent Salim Fakhry expressed his full support for the LASR initiative, which aims to empower producers and drive sustainable economic development in Aceh Tenggara.

Aceh Tenggara is a region rich in agricultural potential but still faces challenges including limited market access, low productivity, and environmental degradation. Multi-stakeholder initiatives like LASR are seen as vital to addressing these issues holistically.

The Leuser Alas-Singkil River-basin (LASR) initiative is a three-year project (2023–2025) funded in part by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) as part of the Sustainable Landscape Program Indonesia (SLPI). LASR is being implemented by Swisscontact, with support from partners including KOLTIVA. Project Manager Christina Rini, accompanied by Ross and Rikto from the LASR team, emphasized that LASR operates across priority districts in the Leuser Ecosystem (Kawasan Ekosistem Leuser/KEL).

The LASR project supports local governments and stakeholders to halt habitat loss in the Leuser Ecosystem, while simultaneously generating sustainable economic opportunities for local populations.

The initiative also targets reductions in rural poverty and greenhouse gas emissions through improved land-use governance, a core focus of the broader SLPI program. According to Swisscontact, the expected benefits of this approach include intact ecosystems, improved agricultural productivity, and increased income through integration into globally competitive and sustainable value chains.

The project is active in Aceh Tenggara, Aceh Singkil, and Subulussalam—three key districts within the Leuser landscape. In Aceh Tenggara, initial steps include stakeholder consultations, village-level assessments, and the development of collaborative mechanisms to guide implementation.

This builds on recent developments in the region, following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2024 in Aceh Singkil between the local government, Swisscontact, KOLTIVA, and 10 other stakeholders to launch the Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MSF) Dashboard and implement a Sustainable Palm Oil Action Plan. The MSF initiative in Aceh Singkil laid the groundwork for jurisdictional sustainability efforts that are now being extended to Aceh Tenggara and other Leuser landscapes.

KOLTIVA’s Role: Technology-Driven Traceability and Sustainable Governance

KOLTIVA plays a vital role in advancing LASR’s efforts in Aceh Tenggara, notably through the co-development of the Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MSF) Dashboard to support sustainable palm oil governance. Through its field-proven digital ecosystem and traceability platform, KoltiTrace MIS, KOLTIVA strengthens agricultural data management and improves visibility across the supply chain.

By providing producers, cooperatives, and local authorities with tools to monitor productivity, report field activities, and assess progress on sustainability indicators, KOLTIVA enables smarter, more transparent decision-making. Its integrated tools also support event tracking, document libraries, and real-time KPI monitoring—key components for scaling the LASR program.

Bridging Producers to Knowledge and Markets

The meeting in Aceh Tenggara reflects a growing momentum for integrated landscape management in the Leuser region. With government support, international cooperation, and innovative technologies, the LASR project holds promise for halting deforestation, improving livelihoods, and securing a sustainable future for communities in and around the Leuser Ecosystem.

As pilot activities begin across selected subdistricts, the synergy between LASR, KOLTIVA, and local government leadership offers a model for collaborative action in tackling climate, environmental, and economic challenges simultaneously.
