Key Insight for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) Impacted Commodities

Deforestation is turning forests and trees—once vital carbon sinks—into major net emitters of carbon dioxide, threatening global climate action and driving a sharp rise in temperatures. The emissions from rainforest loss are now nearly 25% higher than those generated by the European Union and only slightly below U.S. levels (Earth.org, 2025).

Since one of the main reasons for deforestation is agriculture, particularly agricultural expansion, the EU’s Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) plays a crucial role in addressing this issue. The regulation targets commodities such as palm oil, coffee, cocoa, soy, rubber, wood, and cattle—products closely linked to global deforestation. Its primary objective is to ensure that the EU’s consumption of these commodities does not contribute to deforestation or land degradation. As a result, agribusinesses dealing with these commodities must comply with the regulation to maintain market access and avoid fines or sanctions.

Starting December 31, 2025, operators and traders will be required to trace and verify the origins of these commodities to ensure compliance with the regulation, which prohibits links to illegal deforestation or land conversion. In addition, they must submit due diligence statements demonstrating adherence to local laws and EUDR requirements. Failure to comply could result in fines, restricted market access, and significant reputational damage. As one of the largest markets for these commodities, the EU's stricter regulations demand adaptation. Businesses risk supply chain disruptions and higher operational costs if they fail to comply.

Given that palm oil, coffee, cocoa, soy, rubber, wood, and cattle are key contributors to global deforestation, it is essential for organizations involved in their production or trade to understand the regulations and challenges tied to these commodities. To help you navigate this complex landscape, our factsheet offers in-depth insights into these topics and provides valuable guidance for sustainability and compliance.
